Project London featured in Homes & Gardens: Designing a Restful Home Spa

The feature looks at a project where we moved away from the conventional bathroom set-up to create something much more considered: a private home spa complete with a generous steam room and sauna.

For us, the brief was always about more than simply creating a beautiful bathroom. We wanted to design a space that supported our client’s focus on everyday wellbeing, while still feeling connected to the wider home.

Designing around the details

Introducing a sauna into a residential project brought a considerable amount of technical complexity behind the scenes. Ventilation, heating, heat-compatible materials and drainage all needed to be carefully considered, alongside the practical requirements for servicing the steam generator and sauna heater.

We worked closely with GymCraft London to deliver the sauna and steam room, while Surface Designs London helped us achieve the seamless microcement finish. One of the more discreet details was the inclusion of two push-to-open, plaster-in access doors. Only one was required functionally, but introducing a second created visual symmetry within the space.

It is exactly this kind of detail that can be easy to overlook in the finished room, but makes a significant difference to how a space feels.

Warm, tactile and quietly luxurious

Aesthetically, we wanted the bathroom to feel calm and restorative, taking cues from a Japandi spa aesthetic without becoming overly minimal.

The material palette brings together warm timber, microcement, richly veined marble and glazed green tiles. Porcelain tiles from Mandarin Stone were selected for the steam shower for their durability and low water absorption, while the contrasting textures help to give the room depth.

“The palette strikes a beautiful balance between the warm timber and other surfaces,” says Marcelina, creating a calming Japandi-inspired spa aesthetic.

We also introduced glazed green Mandarin Stone tiles to the vanity wall, alongside an antique bench beneath the window and textured wall artwork in a rich oxblood tone. Together, these details bring warmth and personality to what could otherwise have been a very pared-back scheme.

The bespoke joinery by our sister brand, Cor Domi, was another important part of the design. With storage reduced by the statement ribbed marble vanity, Cor Domi created shallow bespoke joinery with LED-lit open shelving, carefully colour-matched to the timber tones of the sauna.

The result is a space that feels serene and luxurious, but also works hard beneath the surface.

For us, that balance is what good residential design should achieve. The finished room should feel effortless, even when the process behind it involves considerable planning, technical coordination and craftsmanship.
